Plein-air Baltimore

Artist’s Statement:

Baltimore has always been attracting me with its diversity. Walking around discovering interesting architecture and scenery has become one of my favorite things to do. Painting on site allows me to capture the unique moments I experience, expressing the immediacy in a way can never be reached by painting from photos. I hope to communicate with the viewers in a visual language that is honest and sincere, and I find representational realism translating the best between the natural world and the two dimensional surface. While painting plein-air, I spent hours being with my subject, sometimes surrounded by it, which brings even more joy to the process. I wish to bring the scenery alive with my brushes that are always working, my eyes that are always observing, and my heart that never stops feeling.

Junyi Liu was born in 1995 and grew up in Guangdong, China. She developed an interest in painting and drawing at a young age. During high school, she began to study the 19th Century Russian Academic drawing methods in workshops. In 2014, she came to the U.S. and majored in Visual Arts at University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS). She transferred to Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2016, majoring in Painting. Her works have been exhibited in Cartavetra Gallery, Palazzo dei Cartelloni Gallery, Peabody Institute, Maryland Art Place, MICA, and UIS, among other galleries.
